While the Spinone is the perfect dog for some people, it may not be the right one for you. Following are some of the reasons why a Spinone just might not fit into your lifestyle.
If you want a macho guard dog, the Spinone isn’t for you. A Spinone is a wonderful alarm system but it is not what would be considered a protection or attack dog. After sounding the alarm, it will leave any aggressiveness to you.
If you do not want a constant companion, the Spinone may not be right for you. Though the Spinone can live its life outside, it is happiest when in the company of humans. The Spinone is a people-dependent breed and requires a great deal of human contact for its mental well-being. Being a submissive breed, the Spinone must be properly socialized or it tends to become shy and withdrawn.
If a wet face turns you off, a Spinone probably is not the dog for you. While it is not generally considered a slobbery, wet-faced breed, the Spinone does have a beard and it does get wet. However, most are quite willing to have their faces wiped of excess water after a trip to the water bucket.
If you have allergies to dogs, you shouldn’t consider a Spinone. Though it is a relatively clean dog with little odor, it can and does lose some hair. Not a heavy seasonal shedder like some breeds, the Spinone sheds some hair year-round. The Spinone’s minimal shedding is not a problem for most people, but it would be enough to cause allergy flair-ups.
If you are looking for a big-running hunting dog, the Spinone probably won’t suit you. The Spinone tends to hunt fairly close, checking in often to make sure you haven’t gotten lost. Beeper collars and bells are necessary only when hunting in very heavy cover.
If you don’t have the time to spend on some training in good manners, the Spinone probably isn’t the right dog for you. The Spinone is very easily trained. However, it does require guidelines and rules to be set forth for it to follow or it can become a “doggie delinquent”.
If you have gotten through this list and didn’t find anything that applies to you, maybe you SHOULD consider a Spinone. They are, after all, one of the most delightful creatures on this earth.
WARNING!! Spinoni are addictive! If you find that your life includes a Spinone, it is very likely that you will want to add another one.
